This fall 8th grade Spanish classes had the opportunity to Skype with someone in Costa Rica. One of our 8th graders has an older sister studying abroad in Heredia, Costa Rica, and she was kind enough to talk with each class and answer their questions about Costa Rica and studying abroad in general. Students asked questions in both Spanish and English and had very interesting conversations with our guest speaker.
This was our first time using Skype in the classroom, and it went off without a hitch!
When we Skyped with Meagan, it was a really fun experience because it was really neat to me how much we learned. The Spanish culture sure is different then the one I live in. I liked seeing the differences in our culture. It was also fun to understand how they lived their life in Costa Rica. What they ate for a typical breakfast, lunch, and dinner! She told us about how they celebrated holidays and special occasions such as birthdays. It was neat and unusual how they celebrated compared to how we celebrate. I really hope that we could do this again. The Skype call was a really great experience.
ReplyDeleteSkyping with Megan was a really cool experience. She showed us around her guest house, and explained a lot about herself while doing so. She takes espanol, and photography classes, she also wants to be a Ingles teacher in a speaking speaking country. She wants to go to Columbia, but she says it is too dangerous for her. Where she is located she sees many animals there like monkeys, sloths, lizards, and lots of butterfly. She also likes the money there, because it is more colorful and it has animals on it. One of her favorite experiences there was when she went scuba diving with jellyfish. it was really fun skyping her, she was nice and funny, i enjoyed it.

DeleteOne day in Spanish class we had a really cool experience by Skyping with a college student who was studying abroad for Spanish class. Her name was Megan (sorry for misspelling if any)and she was studying abroad in Costa Rica, she first wanted to go to Colombia but it was to dangerous. She told us all about what it was like there, what she did, and some of the differences from there to here. She took us around on a tour through her guest house showing us her view, and something unusual to us: all stone/concrete floors. She told us about how she had seen so many cool animals on land, and while she went snorkeling. She shared that she thought that the people their drove so crazy and dangerous, that that was something you really had to watch out for. We learned that chocolate there is VERY expensive, which is unusual, because here you can get chocolate ranging from different prices. It was a very cool learning experience because at the time, even though she wasn't it a country that mainly celebrated it, people were getting ready for the Day of The Dead, which at the time we were learning about. Megan is studying abroad because in the future she wants to become an English teacher in a Spanish speaking country. Overall this was a really cool experience, and was really interesting having someone from where we are going and experiencing a foreign culture. Thank you Megan!

ReplyDeleteI believe skyping with Megan was a really great learning experience for everyone. Unlike the 4 students from UVM who came and talked to us, Megan did not grow up in a Spanish environment. Coming from Vermont you do not hear Spanish being used on an everyday basis like you may in Florida or California so I think it's neat she found a passion in something that wasn't necessarily "common". Megan shared with the class almost everything about her experience including what type of animals she's seen, what type of food she tried and her favorite dishes. She shared with us what it was like going there and what it is like living there vs. here. Megan talked about who she lives with, their personalities, habits, routines, and the traditions they have. She explained what school is like for her, the teachers, and other classes she is taking. Megan has got to take quite a few mini trips around her area to further study Spanish culture, which I think is very neat. Megan told us that they celebrated Day of the Dead, but not as much as other Spanish countries. She also told us they do trick-or-treat in Costa Rica but no trick or treaters came to her "house" because there is a gate around it. Megan is staying in a house that is next to a cemetery, but she does not seem bothered by it. Megan told us from when she first started studying Spanish she always knew she wanted to travel abroad. Everyone got to ask Megan a question(s) in Spanish and English; it was great to hear all the different curiosities of my classmates. In my opinion speaking with Megan was easier than the 4 UVM students just because she didn't have an accent and her English was very, very clear. Big thanks to Megan for dedicating her day to all our Spanish classes and helping us get a better idea of Spanish culture first hand!
ReplyDeleteI am currently learning Spanish with native speakers through http://preply.com/en/spanish-by-skype and I must say that the quality presented is very good, but I would like to try another option so I can choose the best
