Comida Latina

As we wrap up our Food and Restaurant unit this week, I want to share some photos from our Comida Latina research project presentations.  Many students chose to prepare a sample of the dish they researched they did a fantastic job recreating authentic recipes from around Latin America for their classmates to taste!

íTortillas!

Here are some photos from our cooking day last week!  Students learned how to prepare tortillas de maíz, or corn tortillas, from scratch and then we used the tortillas to make quesadillas!  The main ingredient for homemade tortillas, masa harina, is fairly easy to find and is very affordable. (I purchased our supplies at Price Chopper in Burlington.)  I've encouraged students to make tortillas for their families at home and will offer extra credit for those who document the process with some photos or a short video!

Extra credit opportunity!

For those students who enjoy cooking there are TWO extra credit opportunities in this unit!  Students can choose to prepare either Mexican tortillas de maís or tortilla española from Spain and document the process with a series of photographs or a short cooking video. Students should email me their photos or videos for me to share with other 8th graders and here on our blog!
